The Honorable Shannon Grove
California State Senate
1021 O Street, Room 7150
Sacramento, CA 95814
Dear Senator Grove:
On behalf of the Tulare County Board of Supervisors, I write to express our strong support for SB 375. This critical legislation will streamline wildfire preparedness efforts by removing unnecessary regulatory barriers under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA), the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and the California Coastal Act. By cutting bureaucratic red tape, SB 375 will accelerate wildfire mitigation projects such as vegetation management, controlled burns, and firebreak construction—proactive measures essential to protecting lives, homes, and communities across California.
Tulare County is no stranger to the devastation caused by wildfires. Our region has witnessed firsthand the destruction, displacement, and economic strain that fires impose on communities. Unfortunately, existing regulations often slow the implementation of critical fire prevention projects, increasing the likelihood of catastrophic wildfires.
SB 375 presents a balanced and responsible approach to wildfire preparedness by ensuring timely permitting processes while maintaining environmental protection through scientifically guided conservation measures. The bill strengthens coordination with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), providing necessary clarity and efficiency in obtaining incidental take permits and other environmental approvals. Additionally, SB 375 requires annual updates on wildfire preparedness plans, reinforcing transparency and accountability in fire prevention strategies.
The Tulare County Board of Supervisors urges the Legislature to support SB 375, empowering local agencies to act swiftly to reduce wildfire risks. By streamlining these processes, we can better protect our communities, preserve our natural landscapes, and safeguard California’s residents.
Sincerely,
Pete Vander Poel, Chair
Tulare County Board of Supervisors
