The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Adult Corrections STC CORE Academy currently consists of 240+ hours of job specific training that exceeds the minimum training requirements of Article 3 Section 1020 of Title 15, including PC832 Laws of Arrest and Firearms training (COS), Chemical Agents (OC), Baton, First Aid/CPR, Arrest and Control techniques, Tactical Communication, De-Escalation, Mental Health, Scenario Based Training, Inmate Manipulation Techniques, Gang supervision and overview, Title 15 and Title 24 Minimum Jail Standards, Case Law review, Constitutional law, Adult Offender intake, booking, release, Officer Safety, Facility Safety and Security, Key Control, Adult Offender movement and transportation, Physical Conditioning and many other job-related courses.
The Tulare County Sheriff's Office Adult Corrections Officer CORE Academy is presented twice a year, with courses beginning late Spring and late Fall. Each Academy is a 6-week course, with tests conducted weekly to challenge the cadet’s comprehension of the material instructed. Each Cadet is required to maintain an 80% or better grade average for each test given. The Cadets are graded on Behavioral Skills tests, where they perform specific tasks they have been taught, several multiple-choice tests answering questions relating to the materials presented, and Written Skills testing, showing what they’ve learned on the documentation portion of training.

Overview: The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Adult Corrections STC CORE Academy consists of 240+ hours of job specific training for Correctional Deputies, that exceeds the minimum training requirements of Article 3 Section 1020 of Title 15, including: , Chemical Agents (OC), Baton, AXON Taser, First Aid/CPR certification, Arrest and Control and defensive tactics techniques, Tactical Communication, De-Escalation, Mental Health and “crisis intervention” training, Scenario Based Training, Inmate Manipulation Techniques, Gang supervision and overview, Title 15 and Title 24 Minimum Jail Standards, Case Law review, Constitutional law, Adult Offender intake, booking and release, Officer Safety, Facility Safety and Security, Key Control, Adult Offender movement and transportation, Physical Conditioning and many other job-related courses. (OC, Baton and AXON Taser are agency specific only)
Prerequisite: Must be 18 years of age to apply and must possess a valid California’s Drivers License. A Department of Justice Live-scan (fingerprint scan) must be completed indicating their criminal history background does not prohibit the student from owning, possessing, or having a firearm under their control, prior to the attendance of this academy. Students must complete a Personal Information Questionnaire as well as a written assessment consisting of Comprehension skills, Written skills, Math skills and Vocabulary skills.
Medical Clearance: Students must provide a statement of physical and medical fitness from a licensed professional, at their own expense. The student will be required to participate in Physical Conditioning exercises consisting of fifteen minutes (or greater) enhanced cardiovascular activity, 1.5 mile run, 100 yard sprint, 165 lb dummy drag, push-ups, sit ups.
