On 05-18-18 just prior to the school’s lunch break, a Deputy assigned as a School Resource Officer (SRO) to Charter Alternative Academy witnessed two separate gang fights erupt between six students. The participants were all juveniles who attended the school.

Due to the quick efforts of the on-site School Resource Officer to intervene and control two of the aggressors, school administrators and the Deputy were able to keep the disturbance to a minimum until additional units arrived.  Within minutes, three additional Tulare County Sheriff's units arrived on scene, assisted with the investigation and arrested three of the six students who were deemed the primary aggressors.

No weapons were used or located during this incident.

The immediate action taken by school administrators and the SRO Deputy prevented further injury to attending students and staff.  One student was treated on scene by a school nurse for minor injuries to his lip.  All involved students' parents were notified of the incident.

The school was locked down for approximately one hour without further delay or inconvenience to the community. School staff will handle the other participants in the melee administratively. The Sheriff's Tulare Area Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team (TAGNET) will conduct follow up on this incident.
