Tule Canyon Gets Much-Needed Makeover

Over the weekend, Deputies from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, with help from the California Highway Patrol, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the USFS conducted a proactive enforcement detail in the Tule Canyon area located east of Springville on Highway 190, between Springville and Camp Nelson in the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

The detail was organized after Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Resident Deputies noticed an increase in vehicle and pedestrian traffic, large amounts of trash being left in the USFS recreational areas, gang members using and abusing the areas, gang graffiti that continues to accumulate and is not being removed, and illegally parked vehicles causing a hazard to the safe flow of traffic on Hwy 190 and Wishon Dr.  In addition, the lack of any accessible public restrooms has led to unhealthy conditions, including areas affected downstream by the Tule River.

The enforcement detail led to 27 state and federal citations being issued, 12 impounded vehicles, and five arrests.  The Sheriff’s Office intends to continue its proactive efforts to clean up the recreational areas meant to be safely used and enjoyed by the citizens of Tulare County and its guests.
