****************************ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE*********************************

A man suspected of shooting his girlfriend and infant early Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, in a home on the outskirts of Tulare took his own life later the same day at another house within the city limits of Tulare after a day-long standoff with members of the Sheriff’s SWAT team and police officers from Tulare and Visalia police departments.

Suspect: Larry Zamora, 37
Victims: 39-year-old woman and 14-month-old girl

At about 3 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, deputies were called to the scene of a double shooting on the 22700 block of Road 130. Upon arrival, they found a woman and her infant, each with a gunshot wound. They were transported to area hospitals in critical condition.

The suspect had fled the scene and the vehicle he left in was found on the 1200 block of Richard Smith Avenue in Tulare. A perimeter was set up and the Sheriff’s SWAT team assembled nearby at a Command Post.

Neighbors were evacuated for their own safety.

When the SWAT team approached the house where the suspect was holed up at approximately 9:30 a.m., he fired on them multiple times, striking one Tulare Police Officer in his Kevlar helmet. The officer was taken to Tulare Medical Center and was treated and released in good condition.

His helmet saved his life, Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said.

The standoff continued into the afternoon with multiple attempts by law enforcement to resolve the incident peacefully. The suspect fired additional rounds during ongoing negotiation attempts by Sheriff’s investigators. At approximately 2:30 p.m., deputies discovered the suspect had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Tulare County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the Tulare Police Department, the Visalia Police Department, the California Highway Patrol Air Operations Unit out of Fresno and the Kings County Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit.  Additional standby resources were made available by the Porterville Police Department and the Kings County Sheriff's Office.
