Tulare County Assessor's Office scores 97.86 percent on state evaluation
The Tulare County Assessor’s Office received a passing grade of 97.86 percent on an evaluation performed last year by the State Board of Equalization (BOE), according to an announcement released by the state agency in June. The score represents the accuracy of a sampling of assessments from the 2020/2021 tax roll reviewed by state auditors.
Under the state board’s assessment practices survey program, the BOE periodically evaluates the performance of county assessors to ensure compliance with state law and to promote uniform treatment of taxpayers statewide. The BOE conducts the evaluations on a five-year cycle for the 10 largest counties and on either a random or as-needed basis for the remaining counties.
“BOE audits provide a critical examination of appraisal practices and assessment procedures to validate the integrity of the property tax system. I couldn’t be prouder of our managers and staff for this great achievement,” Assessor/Clerk-Recorder Tara Freitas said.
The 2020/2021 roll contained 155,914 assessments with an enrolled taxable value of approximately $38.6 billion. Passing the evaluation allows the county to receive reimbursement of costs associated with administering supplemental assessments from the state.
