Earthquake Retrofit

The earthquake retrofit exclusion applies to seismic retrofitting improvements or other enhancements using earthquake hazard mitigation technologies on an existing building.

Filing requirements

• Property owners must file a Claim for Seismic Safety Construction Exclusion with the Assessor’s Office before or within 30 days of completing construction.
• Any additional supporting documents must be submitted within six months of project completion.

Exclusion limitations

• The exclusion applies only to the existing portions of a building. Additions constructed as part of the project or entirely new buildings do not qualify.
• The exclusion does not cover unrelated alterations made during the seismic retrofit, such as new plumbing, electrical work, or other finishing materials.
