Avenue 56 Interim Repair Project

The Avenue 56 Interim Repair Project marks the final phase of emergency repairs following the severe storms in March 2023. Avenue 56 is a vital access road for the community of Alpaugh, and the storms left the road flooded and unusable in early 2023.

To restore access, CalFire was called in to raise the flooded portion of the road by placing layers of rock and earth fill material, elevating it by up to four feet. Once this work was complete, County crews applied a chip seal surface to reduce the dust from passing vehicles.

However, about a year later, the road surface began to deteriorate. In response, the County launched the Avenue 56 Interim Repair Project, which involved applying a new layer of hot mix asphalt (HMA) over approximately two miles of the elevated roadway. This temporary solution ensures the road remains safe and accessible while the County continues to develop a long-term repair plan. A permanent fix is expected to be implemented by 2027.

This project is partially funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) through its Emergency Relief Program.
